02:18 am - Student Loans: Income-based repayments
Income-based repayment plans begin today, July 1, 2009.

This will save us SO much money. I recommend this to anyone who feels their student loans have been an albatross!

04:06 pm - More gay marriage updates and actions
If you know anyone in New York state, send them here because this could be a very close vote. More details here.

Meanwhile, here at home in DC, there's a hearing today about gay marriage. Hopefully the board will find that the homophobic Bishop Jackson does not have the right to gather signatures, since he may be found not to be a legal resident of DC.

It's amazing to me the lengths to which these anti-gay folks will go. Why do they hate us so much?

01:29 pm - Marsters and Barrowman
Some people might consider this to be spoilery:

First look at James Marsters in Torchwood via Whedonesque. And hmmm, he's standin' REALLY close to Captain Jack there. ;-)

James has on a lot of makeup. Wow. I don't even wanna know what the deal is with that outfit. Is he an alien, or a weirdly-dressed human, one wonders.

12:11 am - Interview with John Barrowman
Spoiler alert for S2 of Torchwood: interview w/ John Barrowman, via Whedonesque (spoilery mentions of James Marsters).

;-)

And yes, John Barrowman growing up friends with Andy Dick -- the mind does boggle.

10:37 pm - A limping kitten
Today while we were at the vet waiting to pick up the lactated ringer's for Jasmine, a man came in carrying a small white kitten.

He explained to the people at the front desk that his wife had found the kitten on the street, and that it was limping, and could he find out what was wrong with it?

When he agreed to their question about whether he "wanted to take responsibility for it" they gave him a form to fill out, but then he started balking when he found out how expensive X-rays would be. He left the kitten just sitting mewing on the floor while he went outside to have a conversation with his wife on the phone.

We had this momentary pang. Maybe we should pay for the poor thing's X-rays! But no. We had our own sick kitty at home.

In the end the people at the desk seemed to lower the prices a bit, and we handed the man a small amount of cash, and we left (because by then we had finished our own transaction for our own kitty).

It was just SO cute, and was limping piteously, favoring both its right front and back paws, and had a weird rash on its back.

I am a huge sucker for small injured creatures.

It's probably a good thing that our apartment complex has a rule limiting pet ownership to a maximum of two pets (not counting fish).

05:59 pm - Bedtime?
People who have kids, I have a question for you: do you have a strict bedtime for your children?

When I was a kid, our parents made my sister and me go to bed promptly at 8:00 PM every night. When we got to be older, like, 12 years old, it was moved to about 10:00 PM. When we were in high school and had to stay up doing homework, there was no more bedtime.

What I'm talking about though is those first ten years or so. I really thought children were supposed to get a good night's sleep, and up until about ten years ago, I never saw kids out and about late at night. These days, though, if you go to Walmart or Target and it's late, like really late, like 2:00 AM or something, and there's kids, little kids, about six years old, running around the aisles as if they have too much sugar or caffeine in their systems.

The worst example, we went to see the third Pirates movie, which in and of itself I think may be too violent and scary for a five year old. It was a 9:30 showing, a three-hour movie, and there were about 14 kids running around the aisles on sugar highs, waiting for the movie to start. Under ten years old, all of them. Most way under, like around seven.

It wasn't just one errant set of parents who brought their small kids to this late show. It was a whole bunch and they didn't even know each other.

Is it just a new societal thing now where kids don't have bedtimes anymore?

09:07 pm - Waitress
I must endorse "Waitress". Go see this sweet romantic comedy! I cannot endorse this film enough.

I like that it had more genuinely funny moments in it than most romantic comedies, but still plenty of sweetness and romance. I think Nathan Fillion was very well cast, and that he had good chemistry with Kerri Russell.

Also, after I left the theatre I wanted PIE. However, I still don't know where the heck you can find any good pie in Orlando at 10:00 pm at night. We went to a venue restaurant and the pie was not fit to be called pie. VERY disappointing.

09:03 pm - Mommy putting me in the car seat, August 1970
I wanted to scan in some more photos today, since today is Mother's Day, and this is the first mother's day since her passing last year.

My age in the photo: 9 months

What I like about this photo: my mother looks happy, I look happy, her yellow dress is adorable, and her haircut is horrible, with static electricity to boot. Also, the car seat has that uber-sturdy 1970 look to it. Huge, hard black plastic. I think car seats today look really different.

Also, we both have that patented genetically unavoidable Enormous Forehead.

11:57 pm - Yogurt-eatin' Kitty!
Here's our Jasmine enjoying a greek yogurt. She never used to be a food kitty, but since she's gotten ill we've begun to indulge her a lot more. Shrimp, yogurt ... who knows what's next?

09:21 pm - Torchwood coming to BBC America
BBC America announces 'radical makeover' of programming, with the advent of a new 'head honcho'. Clearly they are finally determined to pull the channel out of the doldrums of 30-year-old shows like "Benny Hill", pensioners gardening and searching for antiques, and endless repeats of "Monarch of the Glen".

This includes a continuance of popular contemporary science fiction like "Life on Mars", "Hex" and "Doctor Who" as well as adding "Torchwood" to their line-up.

Finally!

09:38 am - No free donuts
I discovered a sad donut-related fact yesterday. Back up north (say, in Cranston, RI, or in Boston), the Krispy Kreme stores gave out free donuts when the "HOT DOUGHNUTS" sign was on. Down here in Orlando, they don't do that. Apparently this is because both stores down here are "franchise" stores rather than "corporate". This means it is up to the franchise owner whether or not to give out the free donuts.

Obviously the owner of both stores here is the same guy, because the Winter Park Krispy Kreme doesn't give out free donuts and neither does the one over by UCF.

I don't need the sugar anyway. Hmmmmph.

10:20 am - Fate Nixes Doughnuts
For the last few weeks I've been eating a healthy diet. Lots and lots of vegetables, whole grains, omega-3 foods (esp. salmon), lean meats, tofu. I've been staying away from refined sugar.

Then came the cat getting diagnosed, and I kind of fell off the wagon. In fact, this morning I was so depressed I thought I would walk the two blocks (such easy temptation) to the Krispy Kreme and get some doughnuts.

When I got there it wasn't all new and shiny like the one on University, or the one back in Cranston. For some reason, the Winter Park Krispy Kreme is dingy and old and sad. Then there was the huge long line of customers, consisting mostly of smelly hairy construction workers (not the pretty kind). Lastly, the clerk up front seemed unable to work the register.

However, the HOT DOUGHNUTS sign was on, so I thought, "Hey, FREE doughnuts for depressed girl!"

Then my cell phone rang. It was the vet.

He told me that Jasmine did really well on the fluids over the last couple of days, and that her B.U.N. levels are down from 68 to 48 (35 is normal, but cats with advanced renal problems rarely go below 40, so 48 is really good). He also said she wouldn't need to start the at-home sub-cutaneous fluid injections for at least two weeks, maybe not for a whole month. All we have to do is bring her by in two weeks for a blood test to make sure the new diet is helping, and again in two more weeks to do another complete urine and blood panel.

I was so relieved I almost cried. Also, the "HOT DOUGHNUTS" sign had gone off, and the line still wasn't moving.

So I went across the street to Einstein Bagels and got something healthy and whole wheat to eat.

09:09 pm - Jasmine, Strong Kitty
As a few of you know from reading my wife's LJ, our tortoiseshell cat Jasmine has been diagnosed with inoperable polycystic kidney disease. The doctor said she won't live more than another three years, or as little as six months. We are very worried! However, quality is more important than quantity at this point, and she is in extremely good spirits, so that is lifting our spirits. The doctor said most cats her age (6) with such a high Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN) level aren't even eating anymore at all. So I think she's a strong, strong kitty.

We cried and are very stressed and scared, but Jasmine doesn't seem to be picking up on these emotions. She's just in remarkably fine fettle. I am in awe of her. We'll see how she holds up to twice-weekly subcutaneous fluids by needle.

Her sister Pearl is of course treating her badly, as always happens when one of them comes home from the V-E-T smelling like, well, V-E-T. But I guess we have to worry about Pearl as well because it is a genetic disease. This means more blood tests.
